This social dance course introduces participants to a variety of dances centered on interpersonal connection and communication. Some forms that may be studied include Balkan circle dances, Contra Dance, and Swing dance forms. In tandem with dancing, we will consider when, where and why people dance together in social contexts, both currently and historically. We will investigate how cultural values are represented in dances through the use of movement, space, time, and touch. Participants will be asked to improvise, learn choreography, converse about their personal experience, and hold hands.
