Foundational Physical Practices II: Contemporary & Africanist
This foundational studio course focuses on rotating topics in Contemporary and Africanist physical practices and techniques. Students will learn the movement vocabulary and technical skills specific to each style, with an emphasis on body awareness, efficient movement mechanics, alignment, rhythmic understanding, and expressive phrasing. The course emphasizes anatomically sound technique, respecting each student's individual physical capacity.
Through Physical Practice and accompanying assignments—such as readings, documentaries, music, videos, performance viewings, writing, and class discussions—students will also develop an understanding of the theoretical, historical, social, and cultural contexts of each dance form.
Rotating topics in Physical Practice may include the following:
? Western Concert Dance: Contemporary, Modern, Jazz (Concert)
? Africanist: African Traditions, Street Styles, Hip Hop, Jazz (Authentic)
