This course is an introduction to the history and early development of animation with an emphasis on critical study through screenings, reading, and discussion. The subject of animation will be explored from its conception in relation to early cinema and performance art forms with special attention to the influences of race, gender, and labor movements. Advancements in technology, use of different media, and experimental animation will be reviewed.
