Description

Dance & Performance History
This course introduces the history of dance and physical performance as art, social force, and cultural catalyst in the US, Europe, and Asia from 1909 to the Present. Our focus is dance--including crosscurrents with interdisciplinary performance--now and in the past--tracing lines of continuity. We will trace influences, ideas, radical experiments across time. We will approach the study of history paying attention to the dynamics of gender, race, class, disability, and sexuality. We will use conceptual frameworks to explore contemporary perspectives, histories, and counter-histories. Class sessions are divided between discussion and movement research. No dance experience is required.
