Game Industry Ecosystems

Description

The game industry is notoriously dynamic, with creative roles, studio composition, and art practices constantly changing based on the relentless transformations in media creation software, game engines, and platform technologies that underlie modern gamemaking and distribution. This research-based seminar develops critical understanding of the current game industry and player cultures and supports creation of career strategies based on individual portfolio qualities and desired positions in the current field. Seminar work includes development of an online portfolio, learning about game media publication, distribution, monetization, as well as scholarly analysis of the political economy of the game industry, including labor practices, studio organization, and dynamics of software platforms and distribution systems. Class sessions will be structured by instructor and invited guest lectures, required readings in industry discourse and research of local studios and publishers. Students will also receive technical instruction in online portfolio development.
