Description
This studio course is dedicated to experimentalism in the field of games. Students will learn about aesthetic strategies that explore unconventional forms of gameplay and subject matter in games and make small experimental games based on critical study. Seminar sessions involve discussion of selected readings from game and media studies, aesthetic and critical theory, and other instructor-selected scholarly discourses relevant to experimentalism in gamemaking, as well as analysis of examples. Studio sessions are dedicated to experimentation with gamemaking tools and nongame art and design practices, facilitating the development of two studio projects: an interactive play experience shaped by techniques from a self-selected art practice, and a short single-session game experience focused on a specific topic with an emphasis on new aesthetic ideas informed by studies in the videogame avant-garde.
